Welcome to Mangy Kitchen, a collection of recipes passed down through four generations of our Pereira and Suares families.
Here you'll find treasured family favourites, festive dishes, everyday comfort food, and a little glimpse into our family through the food we love.
Hailing from the sun-kissed coastal city of Mangalore in Southern India, our cuisine is a vibrant fusion of flavors, shaped by the many communities that call this city home. It's no surprise that food remains at the heart of every family gathering.
I'm Jean, the curator behind Mangy Kitchen.
My mother, Veera, had an innate talent for cooking. Her French Toast, Chicken Sukka, and Mangalorean fish curries were simply irresistible - one taste was never enough. When she passed, I was happy to discover that my dad had carefully preserved some of her recipes in writing.
As I moved away from Mangalore, I found myself longing for the comforting flavors of home. I turned to my dad and Maizy aunty to learn the basics ,earnestly writing down recipes for tomato saar, jeere meeri chicken curry, dal and even theil piyao vegetables.
Little did I realize that my cousins scattered across the globe still shared the same cravings for Mangalorean food. Having spent much of our childhood in Kuwait, our tastes have been influenced by Middle Eastern cuisine, but at heart, we are as "Mangy" as can be.
As I often flipped through the pages of my cherished handwritten recipe book, an idea began to take shape: 'Mangy Kitchen', a digital home for our family's culinary legacy to be shared, celebrated and preserved for generations to come.
What once lived in stories and fond memories of meals lovingly prepared by our grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles now lives on in our own kitchens, filling them with aromas of their dishes.
Whether you're discovering Mangalorean cuisine for the first time or recreating flavours from your own childhood, we hope these recipes bring warmth, nostalgia, and joy to your kitchen.
